What is The Student Mindset?
Stemmed from the idea that anyone can learn anything. I grew up thinking that I had to go to school, get good grades, get into a career and try not to screw it up. But I was not taught that If you wanted something, you put your whole effort into it.
For example, I grew up with some natural talent in sports, specifically baseball and football. But like most kids, I HATED practice. I hated putting in the work because I didn't understand that to be really great at something, there was a sacrifice that needed to happen. I thought that my talent would take me where I wanted to go. I obviously wanted to be a professional star without having to work everyday at it. But little did I know that talent could only take you so far.
Fast forward to when I got my first sales job. I had a natural sales technique, I could talk someone into making a purchase just through conversation. However it did not lead me to become a top salesperson. But then I found the secret. Don’t be a “hater”, be a student. Learn the techniques that made successful people successful, and do it better. This led me not only to become a top salesperson but later on to a top sales manager.
All of this is to say that The Student Mindset is real and could be applied to our everyday lives. Whether that is in our relationships, career roles, athletics, or entrepreneurship. We need to stop looking through the lens of comparison and make the switch to stewardship. How could we learn from experts in our fields? Take what we’ve learned, make it our own and improve it!
So, if you find yourself struggling like I was, just remember:
Be a student. Never stop learning, never stop growing.
