I’m a little hesitant to share this.
I worry that it makes me seem like I’m not serious about my business.
But I want to be as open as possible so that the right-for-me people become my clients.
Here it is:
One of the reasons I started my own business is to make friends.
I moved around a lot as a kid and then with a divorce and more moves, it’s been challenging to maintain long-term deep friendships.
While I do have some good friends who I’m very grateful for, I yearn for more connection as I get older.
I’d love to have a close small circle of friends who I could rely on to celebrate with and to count on when things get tough.
But it’s not easy to make friends at midlife.
So, when I think about who I want to work with, I consider who I can best help and also whether they would be someone who could become a friend.
For a service-based business to thrive, you need to work with clients you like.
When we’re starting out, we often talk ourselves into working with less-than-ideal (for us) people. We don’t feel we have the luxury of being choosy.
But that’s our minds making us think something that our gut feeling knows is not true.
"Choose your clients as carefully as you choose your friends." - Michael Port
It’s not a luxury to be choosy.
It’s a strategic, values-aligned approach that will ensure you don’t start to resent the work you’re doing.
