Why I Capitalize the Word "Nature"

It's not sloppy grammar, an idle quirk or whim.

I capitalize the word "Nature" for a very deliberate reason.

Nature is the Largest Marginalized Community on Earth

• It's not just empty space we pass through as we travel from place to place

• It's not just where the weather is

• It's not just where we extract resources from

It's an interconnected community of non-human living organisms and non-living things that we depend on for life.

Without Nature, We Die

There's a movement to grant legal rights to Nature. A proposed Chilean constitution that would have recognized the legal rights of Nature recently failed.

• The essential needs of nature have been ignored

• Nature is routinely and systemically abused

• Millions of members of the community are dying

Will Capitalizing Nature Make a Major Difference?

Maybe.

• If it can help people begin to recognize the irreplaceable community of Nature, yes.

• If it can start to change minds and hearts, yes.

• If you start to take action, yes.

Change can start one letter at a time.
