Decision-making is challenging without a framework.
So, I thought I would break down one to consider.
SWOT Analysis
The framework focuses on evaluating:
Strengths;
Weaknesses;
Opportunities; and
Threats.
When to use it?
The benefit of this tool is it is not isolated to business decisions, it can be used in your personal life too.
How to use it?
S - Strengths - How can you emphasise strengths?
Thinking prompts: What do I do well? What qualities make me unique? What are my technical skills? Do I own something that is a strength?
W - Weaknesses - How do I compensate for my weaknesses?
Thinking prompts: Things I lack? Am I limited in resources? Am I unsure of what I am strong at?
O - Opportunities - How can I maximise my opportunities?
Thinking prompts: Have I identified an underserved niche that I can move into? Is there a lack of information in the area? Do I provide a unique insight based on my background?
T - Threats - How do I protect myself from threats?
Thinking prompts: What are my challenges to achieve the goal? Do I need to learn specific technical skills? Is there regulations and red tape I need to be aware of?
So when first starting out using SWOT analysis, it's a bit like riding a bike. Don't be too hard on yourself, just keep pushing those pedals and practicing. Before long, it will be a great asset in your decision-making arsenal.
