Gratitude for Quiet
Melissa Krueger

It’s about 11:30 pm. I’ve been puttering all evening between my journal, some Witchy class catchup, and intentionally avoiding the news from the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border until official announcements have been made.

It’s been a lovely, quiet evening. I am grateful for quiet. I relish in puttering around my office in peace. With the holiday season, I look forward to the next couple of weeks where the only lights on in the home are our Christmas tree, the lights Erich wrapped on the banister and the ones wrapped over the window cornice boxes in the living room.

I absolutely love to putter around in the dark, especially when I’m doing creative writing. I find it helps me focus on what’s in front of me instead of getting distracted by whatever “ooh, shiny!” or “squirrel!” thing is sitting within reach.

If Erich were awake, he’d be gently teasing me about putting some lights on as I write tonight. However… he has fallen asleep on the couch, refusing my couple of attempts to get him to go upstairs and sleep in our bed. As he’s a full foot taller than me and quite a bit heavier, there’s no moving him when he zonks out like this. Eventually he’ll wake up and wander upstairs.

By then, I will have enjoyed falling asleep in the gentle dark quiet upstairs, too.

Maybe I’ll even be graced by the cuddling of one of our feline overlords.

Peaceful quiet to all… and all a good night.
