Working in Marketing for the first time has given me a whole new experience with the word "vague". There are set deadlines but not enough clearly defined details that are important to finish those deadlines. Just this past week, I was asked to adjust a graphic to give it clear spacing. There are no designers on our team so I had to consult the brand guideline. I struggled to figure out how to complete the task but in the end, I was successful by using three mindset shifts that anyone can adopt.
Shift Your Perspective.
The main reason anyone gets stuck on a task is that they are swirling in deep waters of unknowns. If they shift their perspective and finishing a task might be less daunting.
Shifting your perspective can help cultivate new ideas about how to tackle a task.
Shifting your perspective can help renew your motivation to finish the task.
If you shift your perspective you might also learn something new.
Step 1: Take a deep breath.
In those first few moments of frustration when you get stuck on a task, it might seem like a weight is pushing in on you. It is important to give yourself space to think and to take a deep breath. This will quiet your mind and allow you to focus.
Step 2: List what you don't know.
We want to tackle this task backward. It's easier to focus on what you don't know to explore what you either need to research or identify what you do know. This will allow for time to think more clearly about what you need in order to finish this task. It's important to identify your weaknesses to make them into strengths.
Step 3: List what you do know and brainstorm how it will help you.
In order to finish the task no matter how vague or daunting it might seem, it is important to lean into what you do know about the task subject or alternative ways to complete the task. Take time to brainstorm and you might find a new route to take or a detail that can help aid in your process.
