How I Applied James Clear's 4-Step Loop to My Workout Routine
Michelle Traino

Consistently working out, especially after leaving the corporate world, has been a challenge for me despite the ever-present goal of being more fit and healthy. Here's how I applied James Clear's framework to my exercise habit.

Cue: workout after the workday ends

Much of the challenge I discovered in consistently working out was deciding the time of day to get my exercise in. I used to work out first thing in the morning but getting up at 5 am fell by the wayside when I no longer had to deal with a 30-minute commute or be at my desk at a specified time. Without the commute home, it's easy to transition from work straight to working out.

Craving: focus on barre classes vs. exercises I don't enjoy

Discovering the FitOn app has helped tremendously in maintaining my habit because it allows me to do barre classes in the comfort of my own home. After sampling many of the workouts, I was able to establish a favorites list so selecting a workout that I know I won't dread is accomplished within seconds. I've always enjoyed dance, so barre classes make the time fly by.

Response: my workout clothes and space are always ready to go

Since no one will see me when I'm working out, I don't put any effort into my exercise attire. I wear the same shorts and t-shirt every time and they're always on my closet floor. The iPad I use to stream videos is always on my dresser in front of my workout area. All I have to do is open it up and select my workout. Removing as many decisions as possible makes it easier.

Reward: once I'm done, I get to have dinner

I try not to make food a reward for anything, but in this case, it's an essential meal so it works. Dinner is always a time for relaxation. On the days that my husband works, I make a quick dinner for my son and me and we watch one of our favorite shows while eating. This can feel indulgent but it's well-deserved after a long day of expending mental and physical calories.
