In 2024, I went all in on learning how to have better focus. I discovered that our connection with digital devices plays a significant role.
These 3 TED Talks helped me:
Build a habit of writing consistently
Improve my focus & attention span
Reduce screen time usage to 2-3 hours/day
If you want to do the same, I'd recommend getting started with these.
TED Talk #1: How To Get Your Brain To Focus by Chris Bailey
I chose this TED Talk because it's the one that slapped me in the face the hardest, pointing out how I'm approaching focus wrong this whole time.
My big 3 takeaways were:
Reducing screen time leads to reducing distractions which improves our ability to concentrate and focus on important tasks
Boredom is essential because it allows our minds to wander and can lead to increased creativity and problem-solving ability
Have a daily ritual to disconnect from technology to reconnect with the physical world and live an active and fulfilling life
This is why I recommend watching this TED Talk first.
TED Talk #2: The Battle For Your Time: Exposing The Cost of Social Media by Dino Ambrosi
I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to have a healthier relationship with their phones and smart devices.
This talk taught me a lot about the other side of the coin and the cost of social media. The data show the average 18-year-old is on pace to spend 93% of their free time on screens. When we are on social media, we are not paying to use it with money, but we pay with our time and attention. Our free time is our most valuable resource, so we should be mindful of how we spend it.
TED Talk #3: Quit Social Media by Cal Newport
This talk taught me a lot about it's possible to live without social media and how it really damages our ability to focus.
Some golden nuggets I took away:
Social media is not a fundamental technology, it's an entertainment product and not a necessity
Deep, concentrated work is what the market values in the 21st century, not social media presence
Life without social media can be more productive and peaceful, allowing for intense focus and being present in activities
Watch these 3 and then go and take action on them (instead of watching more TED Talks).
