Do you remember the first time you considered whether you should do something because of others' opinions?
Throughout our lives, consciously or not, we need to feel like we belong to our communities. In social psychology, the need to belong is an intrinsic motivation to affiliate with others and be socially accepted.
Another emotion that comes with humanity, evolutionary speaking, is envy. This is because adaptive responses to the environment should increase my chances of survival. Thus the whole purpose of envy is to motivate you into action either by trying harder or coveting.
Now, let me explain.
Remember that time you wanted to take that great opportunity? Or that you wanted to wear that bizarre outfit? Or even when you just decided to start writing online?
The thing is, you will always find people that are with you and others that are against you. Always.
And most of the time, it has nothing to do with you. People just have opinions, and nowadays, it's much easier to have public opinions on other people's lives. Additionally, when you focus on other people, it's much easier to stop focusing on your own life and frustrations.
So if people are going to have an opinion either way, and you're going to be judged based on their own beliefs and limitations, why not go ahead and do what you wanted to, to begin with?
You do you. Celebrate diversity!
