Numbness is one of the lesser-known symptoms of MS, and yet it can be one of the most disruptive.
What Are the Common Causes of Numbness in MS?
Increased iron levels in blood interferes with neuron function.
Lack of myelin in certain areas of the body.
Anxiety and stress.
Facial Numbness
Starts as a mild itching feeling and then grows stronger. Can also interfere with sense of smell. As it worsens, it can lead to taste loss.
Upper Body Numbness
Usually affects both sides of your body. Appears in your upper torso as well as arms. Wearing compression garments can reduce swelling and pressure.
Lower Body Numbness
Related to iron. Blood circulation and "extreme" temperatures contributing factors. Important to keep the body in "moderate" temperature zone. Dressing in layers can help.
How to Deal with MS-related Numbness?
Find out your food intolerances and take them out of your diet.
Drink plenty of water.
Get plenty of sleep
Take breaks throughout the day
Manage your stress.
Meditation and quiet time.
Use compression garments. Compression garments can help reduce swelling, pressure and pain in the arms and hands.
Movement, stretching, and exercise. Some of @ChellaGracillaRochelle Gracilla's 30-second exercises would be great here.
Massages - A simple massage can help improve the blood flow to your arms and hands, as well as reduce stress and improve your mood.
Medications - There are a number of medications that can help improve the symptoms of numbness in MS, including Amitriptyline, Gabapentin, Duloxetine and Amantadine. Discuss this with your doctor
Numbness in MS is a challenging, but it can be treated and managed. Keep track of your symptoms and how you address them. Focus on the things you can do.
