I have been working on developing a consistent fitness routine for the past few years.
These are the 4 simple (but effective) pieces of advice I'd give anyone starting out (or who wants to get started):
Advice #1: Make the decision and follow through, regardless of the mental chatter
We all have that inner voice that makes excuses and tries to talk us out of going to the gym. The key is to acknowledge that chatter will always be there but make the choice to follow through on your decision anyway. Don't fight the chatter - let it be and still take action.
Advice #2: Allow yourself flexibility in your gym schedule
Life rarely goes exactly according to plan. Rather than being rigid about going to the gym at a specific time and getting frustrated when it doesn't work out, allow yourself some flexibility. Focus on the bigger picture of building the habit of going to the gym consistently, even if the timing varies day-to-day.
Advice #3: Understand that discomfort is part of the process
Building a new fitness routine is inherently uncomfortable. You may feel resistance, struggle, or like something is "wrong." Understand this is a normal part of the process and don't let it derail you. Keep putting in the reps, be kind to yourself as you build this new habit, and keep moving forward even when it's hard.
Advice #4: Celebrate your progress and learning along the way
Improving your health and physical fitness is a journey, not a destination. Take time to acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Recognize that even challenges and missteps are valuable opportunities for learning. Embrace the process and progress and enjoy becoming the best version of yourself.
Honestly, I wish someone had told me these 4 things earlier in my own fitness journey.
But I'm at least glad I can pass them along to you. Remember, just keep showing up - you've got this!
