I've recently decided to try my hand at a newsletter. The final piece of the puzzle is choosing the platform.
Here are but a few of the possible options:
Substack: flexible and discoverable, but can't be automated
Revue: great connection to Twitter, easy to use
Ghost: amazing writing experience, expensive to customize
ConvertKit: more powerful, but lacking some design options
There's a bit of irony here, given that my newsletter will be largely focused on apps like the ones I mentioned above.
Some Reasons to Choose Substack
1) The Connection to Twitter
While it doesn't have the ability to add a subscribe section to your actual Twitter account, when you connect Twitter inside of Substack it informs all your followers about your newsletter.
2) Discoverability
It's still early days, but with Substack there are several ways your newsletter might be found by people you don't know. Of the other options, only Ghost offers this, but it was literally released last week.
3) It's Super Well-Known
When people think of email newsletters there's a good chance that Substack comes to mind. That familiarity can work in your favour, since many folks already follow Substack newsletters.
4) The Recommendation Factor
When you have a Substack newsletter you can recommend others on your page. That means that you could be recommended by other creators, thus increasing your exposure to new readers.
5) Expansion Opportunities
You can add separate sections in your newsletter, which can he subscribed to separately. You can also invite other writers to contribute. Revue and ConvertKit don't offer this, but Ghost does.
So, Substack It Is Then?
I thiiiiink that's the decision I've made, at least as a starting point. I have to make up my mind soon, though, because I want to launch within the next couple of days.
