The fear-based kind of procrastination is a major problem in our society.
So much so that I am currently writing my third book about it (Conquer Procrastination). Imagine how much better the world would be if everyone could fulfill their dearest wishes and overcome this wall of guilt.
In the meantime, here are six solutions that have erased the procrastination issue from my life and allowed me to write my first two books in one month:
By using your calendar (more info here), you will know when to execute. You never need to ruminate when you have the motivation to do it. You can also define your upper and lower bound, for example.
"Every day, I will work on X for more than 60 minutes and no more than 90 minutes."
By having a limit, you will know when you are done and can avoid the constant guilt (especially prevalent for us highly conscientious people).
Often you procrastinate because the task is too ambiguous. By asking yourself what is the very next physical action, you remove the onslaught of doubt. Thankfully, you can make mistakes since science has shown you become more focused.
The fear of not being our best and getting it done is debilitating. However, the only thing you can control is your work. If it takes longer to complete, it's ok because you always move forward (compared to procrastinators).
Here is the ultimate hack to working: enjoy it for its own sake.
It's like taking a hot bath. The purpose is to become clean, but the warmth on your skin makes it a fantastic experience every second.
Do the same when you are working by listening to enjoyable music in a comfortable place. Nothing can stop you from working now.
In this article, I argue that perfectionism arises from high expectations and kills creativity. Instead, tell yourself that it's not so important and you are allowed to be disappointed. Once the pressure is off, you can enter flow and produce your best work nonetheless.
Ultimately, you are afraid to be ridiculed by the world (mostly yourself).
However, you can reinterpret the fear as a signal of doing your best work. You will learn from mistakes anyway, so there is no real threat. Remember that this fear paralyzes most people, and you are courageous enough to feel it.
Be in total presence and feel it to move forward.
