Why You Should Welcome The Unknown Instead Of Fearing It + a personal story about me moving out from stinky prison (old apartment) to glittering paradise (new apartment) 👇
Fear of the unknown is something we all have to various degrees. It keeps us trapped in the familiar at the expense of better or more adventurous options. There are countless examples of people staying in a terrible job, home, relationship etc, because they cannot imagine themselves taking the leap to a better career and living.
But the unknown is not bad per default, it is only unknown.
Once you recognize this truth, you can start to have a better relationship with what you do not know.
10 days ago, I had enough. Not only was my apartment small, dirty and stinky but things started to break down. The kitchen tap, the refrigerator, the washing machine, the bed, all stopped working and fell apart. Combined with a very distant landlord and seeing people smoking in the halls, I could not take the situation any longer.
So I did what I was secretly afraid of: actively look for a new apartment in a country barely knowing the language.
I scanned through 134 apartments and reached out for 20. After 5 apartment visits, I moved in to a new one yesterday. More expensive but more spacious, fresh and overall luxorious. When I inaugurated my new bathtub (more accurately a home spa), I felt the most happiness in my entire life, not joking. As I am writing these lines in the cozy sofa, everything looks absolutely beautiful and the level of bliss is maximum. Escaping the pig pen to live in paradise.
Why do I tell you all of this? Because this is what can happen when facing the unknown. I took the leap, it was scary but I came out orders of magnitude better.
And you can too.
Strategies to help you cope with the unknown:
The Total Living lifestyle is practically designed to cope with the unknown. Had I not practiced it, my anxiety would have gone through the roof.
During the entire apartment process, I went through The Power Of Now three times, the bible of Total Presence. Being totally present is absolutely key for handling the future and every situation with ease. Moreover, being personally antifragile helps you realize that the unknown is your friend, not your enemy. Regardless of what happens, you will come out stronger.
So if you also are considering to move to a new place, or doing something new like quitting your job, starting a sidehustle, begin a creative path, telling your true feelings to a close one, remember this:
When you are totally present, you will maximally take advantage of every situation. You also radiate joy and others will see it.
Regardless of what happens, you will emerge much stronger.
Write down every thought, worry or what-if-thought, as well as any related information.
And take action.
