I have recommended this book to a number of people recently and so I thought it worth talking about here.
"Turn the Ship Around!" is a book by David Marquet, a retired US Navy captain, that describes his experiences as the leader of a nuclear-powered submarine. The book describes how he transformed the Santa Fe from one of the worst performing submarines in the US Navy to one of the best by implementing a leadership style he calls "intentional leadership."
Marquet argues that traditional leadership, where the leader makes all the decisions and tells people what to do, is inefficient and leads to poor performance. Instead, he advocates for "intentional leadership" where leaders empower their subordinates to make decisions and take ownership of their work. This creates a culture of engaged and responsible employees who take initiative and make better decisions.
Marquet describes how he implemented this leadership style by giving his crew members more autonomy and responsibility. He did this by giving them clear direction and expectations, but allowing them to figure out how to achieve those goals on their own. He also provided them with the necessary training, tools, and resources to be successful.
The result of this leadership style was that the crew members became more engaged, motivated and productive. They were more confident in their abilities, and they took more initiative. The submarine's performance improved dramatically.
Marquet's book is a powerful read, and it has become a popular leadership title. It has clear and actionable advice, and it has been used as a guide by many organisations looking to improve their performance.
