Your communication skills determine whether you keep rising.

After 20 years working with tech leaders, here's what I've noticed separates the ones who get trusted from everyone else:

1. Send a weekly "here's what we shipped and why it matters" email to your executives.

Three sentences. What got done. Why it matters to the business. No jargon.

Most execs have no idea what engineering actually accomplished this week. Fill the vacuum before someone else fills it with complaints.

2. When you don't know something, say it immediately.

"I don't know, let me find out" builds more credibility than a confident guess that unravels later.

The best tech leaders I know say "I don't know" more often than the mediocre ones. Not less.

3. Ask "what would have to be true?" instead of saying something is impossible.

"We can't do that" ends conversations.

"We could do that if X and Y were true" opens them. Executives remember who finds paths forward.

4. Practice explaining your most complex project in two sentences.

Not because it's actually that simple. Because your CEO will ask about it in an elevator and you'll have 30 seconds.

The leaders who get executive trust can translate on demand.

5. When someone pushes back, ask one question before defending.

"Help me understand your concern" beats "Let me explain why you're wrong."

Most resistance isn't about your idea. It's about something the other person hasn't said yet.

6. Give credit publicly. Give feedback privately.

Never the reverse.

This sounds obvious until you watch how many leaders do the opposite when they're frustrated.

7. When an executive dismisses your expertise, get curious instead of defensive.

"What would help you feel more confident about this?" surfaces the real objection.

They're usually not questioning your competence. They're managing their own discomfort with something they can't evaluate.

None of these require talent. None require budget. None require permission.

They just require consistency.

The tech leaders who keep rising aren't better at technology. They're better at making their value visible to people who can't read code.
