There are many benefits for a nation that achieves cultural unity.

The most obvious being its influential strength on the world stage. For example, when we think of countries with a strongly united, outward-facing front that are also cultural powerhouses of the world, the US, Russia, the UK, and China are usually the top candidates. Coincidentally, these 4 nations all have significant cultural unity at the national level.

Based on the above example (and many other instances in our modern world), I argue that being culturally homogeneous is one sufficient condition for cultural unity.

Okay, let’s take a step back and note 2 things of import.

First, cultural homogeneity is defined as ‘the state in which a population exhibits a high degree of uniformity in cultural traits and practices.’ Second, a distinction between a ‘sufficient’ and a ‘necessary’ condition must be established. In prepositional logic, a sufficient condition can be understood as a condition that guarantees a certain outcome, while a necessary condition can be thought of as a condition required for a certain outcome to be true, but does not guarantee it.

To put it in logical form: in a relationship between X and Y that states ‘If X, then Y’, X is sufficient (but not necessary) for the occurrence of Y, while Y is necessary (but insufficient) for X to be true.

With that out of the way, the following are 3 mechanisms through which cultural homogeneity can work to help a nation achieve cultural unity.

1) Shared Practices, Norms, Values, and Beliefs.

A culturally homogeneous nation typically has a set of beliefs and values common throughout the population.

These commonly accepted standards of behavior and of thinking lay the groundwork for effective and efficient social cohesion. When a particular society shares in such norms, collective purpose and action becomes easier, and social trust and cooperation benefit from it. In turn, a predictable social order emerges.

By being homogeneous with respect to cultural practices, stability is induced, and many common hindrances to national strength and unity fade.

2) A Common Language.

An extension of shared cultural practices is a common language that underpins all communications.

The advent of the Internet less than half a century ago has increasingly and drastically put the significance of a common language under the spotlight. As citizens of the globalized digital age, we discern the importance of English as the lingua franca of both the virtual and non-virtual world. If you scale this same logic down from the global level to the national level, you will find that a common language plays the same unifying role within a country as English does the world.

By being homogeneous with respect to language, communication accuracy is enhanced, social and political integration is facilitated, and the means to muster strength at the national level are established.

3) Attachment to National Identity.

A strong sense of collective identity based on a common nationality flows smoothly as a consequence of homogeneity in culture.

Corny but true: humans are inherently social beings. Most everybody long for belongingness to something greater than the self as a way of psychological actualization, and being a national is one solid way of seeking greater social acceptance. When one feels a part of a greater social structure, meaning and purpose can be found, leading to both an improved social environment and camaraderie.

By having a collective sense of the identity based upon the idea of a nation, social cohesion is further enhanced with the added benefit of fulfilling individual psychological needs.

Conclusion

Thus I have given you 3 mechanisms through which cultural homogeneity can help a nation achieve cultural unity.

However, it must be re-noted that these are not necessary for cultural unity—they are merely sufficient. The difference between the two is important in a thorough comprehension of this piece and thus must also be re-emphasized. Cultural homogeneity is but one condition that can bring about cultural unity, but it is not all; for example, having a highly autocratic centralized government could trump the need to homogenize, a case in point being Singapore.
