One thing that you notice with newbie Business owners is the things the love doing. And the things they avoid.
The pattern is typically this:
Web designer - > knocking out well-designed websites
Cafe owner -> cooking a great selection of meals on the menu
Maker -> working in the Studio
What they love doing here is their "craft".
They are craftsman who've decided to go out and work for themselves.
And they want to keep doing what they've always done. Their craft.
What they avoid is all the stuff that is not core to their traditional "craft".
Typically this are things like Bookkeeping, Sales, Social Media Marketing, Business Planning, etc.
I've known many who'd be happier if they could handball all of this off to someone. Anyone.
SOME DOWNSIDES
Growing the business will be harder
Tripling sales over time will be difficult for the craftsman. Why? She doesn't like to sell, remember?
Getting a good return for your investment will be harder.
After some years, selling the business will be harder. The business hasn't really grown, despite the years.
Competitors are more likely to grow their business
Any well managed business is more likely to grow than one that focuses on just making stuff.
THE FLIP: A MINDSET SHIFT
What's really needed is an acknowledgement that transitioning to working for oneself is a permanent identity change. This is necessary in order to be more effective.
We did this when we moved from being:
an individual to a couple with our life partner
a couple to parents
We need to do the same when we start up our own business.
This will set in motion all the good things that aid scaling and growth.
And move us from
being just a craftsman - to being a business builder.
just working in the business to working on the business.
