5 things I would tell my 25 y/o self about overworking
Randy Ng

#1: Redefine Rest

Don't feel pressured to use leisure time productively. To truly be at leisure and focusing on the pleasure it brings, is the only way not to waste it.

#2: Pay yourself first

When it comes to time, pay yourself first. If an activity or a certain friendship matters to you, set aside time for it no matter how many other things at work may be begging for your attention after office hours.

#3: Let tomorrow worry for itself

"If I can just finish this piece of work today, I will have more time for a breather tomorrow" is what you constantly motivate yourself with, but work will always have a way to fill up your time. Learn to stay with the anxiety of feeling overwhelmed, without trying to do more.

#4: Aim to be 1% better every day, that's good enough

If we are 1% better every day for a year, we will end up being 37x better by the time the year is over. Identify small and actionable steps to commit to daily.

#5: Don't mind what happens

A life "not minding what happens" isn't one to abandon logic and wisdom to do what is necessary to prevent bad things from happening. Rather, it is one without the burden of making sure our plans come to fruition when we realize the future is under no obligation to comply.

"But all a plan is - all it could ever possibly be - is a present-moment statement of intent." - Oliver Burkeman
