Doing things outside the status quo. Chatting startups, fundraising, and product.

When I was getting started in product, it was really hard for me to parse out the difference between vision, mission, and strategy.

Sometimes it's nice to revisit the basics, so here's a quick breakdown:

Your Mission is the thing you are setting out to do.

Typically just shy of "make the world a better place."

Your Vision is how the world will look once you achieve your mission.

Some sort of fantastical image of the world in which we all live.

Your Strategy is the actions you plan to take, and the reason behind them.

There are actually two types of strategy:

  1. Business strategy is your plan of action that precludes your competitors from eating your piece of cake.

  2. Product strategy is your plan of action that achieves your vision according to your mission.

Understanding these basic definitions is critical to understanding how to envision and prioritize the business you are building.
