In the past 10 years of working, I've been assigned various shifts and work schedules.
I've tried working regular, mid-shift, late-night, and even rotating shifts. Each has advantages and disadvantages, and one may be more suitable for you than the other. Hopefully, these pros and cons can help you decide which to choose.
Disclaimer: These are based on the RTO setup and personal experience.
#1. Regular Shift (8 AM to 5 PM)
Pros: There are more opportunities for work-life balance, as most people work during these hours, making the night a good time to meet up with friends and family.
Cons: Since more people work during this period, the traffic is terrible. Personal errands are also harder to schedule because they may require you to use your leaves. Your compensation is also fixed to the base salary.
#2. Mid Shift (2 PM to 11 PM)
Pros: There is less traffic to and from the office during the mid-shift. Your day also "starts late," giving you more time to sleep or run errands. You can also get some night benefits.
Cons: It's difficult to schedule activities with regular shift people. Commuting at noon is exhausting, especially in summer, and going home at midnight is risky (if not dangerous).
#3. Night Shift (9 PM to 6 AM)
Pros: The main advantage of the night shift is the night differentials, which may also include taxi allowance. Since it's quiet during this time, focusing on work is easier.
Cons: There are higher risks to your physical health, like various lifestyle diseases and even cancer. Your mental health is also affected, as it's correlated to depression. Your social health is also affected as you'll see friends and family less. Sleeping during a hot or noisy day is also harder, so you'll need an air conditioner, blackout curtains, or earplugs.
#4. Rotating Schedule
Pros: The advantage of a rotating schedule is you will experience all the benefits of each shift. There's also more variety in your work and schedule, so you'll never be bored.
Cons: Working on a rotating schedule means it's harder to develop a consistent daily routine. You may even be required to work during weekends and holidays. It's also challenging to plan months ahead, as you're unsure of your shift in the future. You may also experience sleeping difficulties, leading to physical and mental health issues.
