#52. 5 Underrated Adulting Skills Every Young Adult Needs to Learn
by Kristoffer Jan Notario (@RatRaceRunning)

Adulting is a life-long journey, but some lessons and skills are best learned early.

Fresh out of college and passing the board exam, I thought I had what I needed to learn to be ready in life. However, I immediately realized I was only prepared academically but not in many aspects of adulting. Soon, I had to start learning from experience and others.

Here are five underrated skills young adults would be thankful to learn early on.

1/ Doing Bank Transactions.

Going to a bank can be intimidating for first-timers, but it is a necessary adulting skill.

You need to know how to transact, report incidents, withdraw and deposit, use checks and credit cards, and use online banking services.

Banks are one of the gateways to every adult, whether you're an employee or self-employed.

2/ Scheduling for a Doctor/Dentist Appointment.

Most adults don't like scheduling to a doctor or dentist because they are afraid of what they may find out.

However, frequent check-ups with your doctor and appointments with your dentist can help you maintain a good life moving forward.

As they say, prevention is better than cure.

3/ Having a Healthy Grocery List.

Healthy grocery shopping is underrated because they are often a way to satisfy a child-like craving.

It's essential to learn to discipline yourself in buying healthy food items and avoid shopping like an eight-year-old.

Remember that eating healthy will eventually manifest in our bodies.

4/ Learning to Say No More Often.

We often avoid saying "no" because we don't like disappointing people.

However, if we say yes to everything, we're saying no to some other things - unfortunately, we say no to more important things.

So, it's good to have a non-negotiable list of people you won't say no to - especially your family.

5/ Collecting Payments from Your Debtors.

In an ideal world, people who owe you money will pay you immediately, but we know that rarely happens.

As a rule of thumb, you must be selective of who you lend money to, but if you already lend your money, then asking for your money back is also a skill.

Setting your expectations is crucial to avoid disappointments when they don't pay back immediately.
