In my Southeast Asian upbringing, respect was synonymous with becoming a Doctor, Lawyer, or Engineer (and modern day would include anything related to Computer Science/Tech). I started off as a Mechanical Engineer and ended up venturing into technical sales as a Solutions Engineer. But this journey has led to an unexpected challenge: disentangling my identity from my job title.
As a Solutions Engineer, I blend technical know-how with sales acumen, bridging complex solutions with customer needs. It's a role I enjoy, yet, like my father, I often find myself over-emphasizing my professional identity. In social gatherings, work dominates my conversations, overshadowing other facets of who I am. This singular focus, at times, strains my mental well-being, leaving me fixated on job aspects beyond my control.
A recent epiphany came while reading "Everyday Dharma" by Suneel Gupta. Suneel's interpretation of 'dharma' as essence plus expression resonated deeply. I realized in my pursuit of a respectable occupation, I had neglected my essence - the core of what brings me fulfillment. This realization was liberating. My essence lies in solving business challenges and driving change through technology, with sales being just one avenue to express this essence.
This insight is crucial now more than ever. Three months ago, I embraced fatherhood. As I spend time with my newborn daughter and see her play without a care in the world, I'm reminded of the importance of nurturing her essence, free from occupational pressures. I want her to know: our identity transcends job titles. It's about discovering and honoring our true essence.
This is my commitment as a father – to guide her in exploring her essence and expressing it authentically, true to her own dharma.
