A walk through Knowledge Garden
R.J. Nestor

I live on a hillside in West Virginia. It’s not rural, but it’s definitely not urban. We have an acre of land, neighbors on all sides, and no streets—just a main road at the top of our driveway.

When I’m in a city, I walk everywhere. At home, I hardly walk at all. I see the exercise value, but with no destination, I simply can’t bring myself to do it.

My walking problem is the same as your knowledge management problem.

You want to curate your knowledge, but you’re not sure what to do with it. And because you have “nowhere to go,” you may gather knowledge—and even synthesize some of it—but eventually your system bogs down and you give up.

Your destination doesn’t need to be a four-volume history of Eastern Europe. In a city, I may only walk to the coffee shop and back. But you need an outlet for your process.

When you synthesize knowledge, publish it! Write, tweet, post, film yourself, email someone—whatever. Then let what you publish become the “notes” in your knowledge management.

Your system will come to life because you have somewhere to walk!
