Welcome to my Social Blog

There's one weekly habit that has allowed me to double my weekly habit and it's: tutoring.

You get paid a base rate for teaching on-campus.

Why wouldn't you double your income by teaching off-campus?

Here's how, step by step:

Step 1: Get your name out.

Level 1: Be explicit to colleagues about your desire to tutor. They may tutor a student in a different subject and request a recommendation for a teacher in your subject. Likewise, build relationships within the school community and build an outstanding reputation: build it and they will come.

Level 2: Create a name you want to advertise under e.g. London Road Tutors rather than your actual name. Then create a matching email address where you can be contacted. Then sign up to Canva and create business cards with all of the above information plus what subject and age-range you teach. Distribute these business cards in places like family compounds where you clients may be based.

Level 3: Printing and distributing business cards is expensive and may not target the relevant people. Don't forget about the internet people! Using Canva, create short videos or visuals to advertise your services. Then create a Facebook business page and advertise to your target audience.

Step 2: Schedule

Now that you have a contact you need to schedule.

  • Find out the what level they are studying at, what curriculum they are follow. This will enable you to prepare resources that are impactful.

  • Find out their location. Is it near to your workplace or where you live? If so, try to determine a time which minimises hanging around. Is it near to any other tutees? Can you stack two different clients back-to-back?

Step 3: Arrive early and prepared

  • Arrive early in case you get lost.

  • Make a default 'first lesson' that you use with all tutees. This will enable you to gauge their ability (what they have told you may be inaccurate) and this ensure you know exactly what you are doing on the day. Also,

Step 4: Provide value

  • Don't be scared to stay behind 5 minutes longer than agreed. This will demonstrate that you are committed to adding value and not simply in it for the money

  • Feedback how the session went to parents. Provide outline on what you will cover in future sessions.

  • Remember, if you provide value in your service then you will get outstanding results. Tutoring relies on word of mouth so clients will compound over time.
