"30-Second Exercises" 101: A Crash Course On Everything You Need To Know
Rochelle Gracilla

Google notes:  “Studies demonstrate that between 60 and 90 percent of professional musicians suffer from pain of the musculoskeletal system (eg. Fishbein et al., 1988; Blum, 1995; Spahn and moller, 2011; Ackermann et al., 2012, Kenny and Ackermann, 2013; Gembris et al., 2018).

This statistic bothers me. I and my friends are musicians. Unfortunately, we do or have had body pain.

That's why I created “30-Second Exercises”.

What are “30-Second Exercises”?

Let's explain it with “EASE”:

1/ E—Enable the Habit of Exercise:

Stand/sit and do a 30-second exercise every 45 minutes or throughout the day. This is NOT a run 2 miles or nothing approach.  As James Clear, in “Atomic Habits” suggests, link this new habit to something else, like do a 30-Second Exercise at the Microwave.

2/ A – An Answer:

If you look for objections, you’ll find them.   Common objections to exercise include: “I don’t know what to do,” and “I don’t have time or the space.” 30-Second Exercises answer these objections.

3/ S – Space:

Not having the space is a common objection to Exercising.  So is not having equipment, time, and having to travel to a gym. 30-Second Exercises can be done without equipment, at any time and where you are now.

4/ E – Exercise can be easy:

Wouldn’t it be nice if exercise was easy?  Exercise can be easy, and fun with the help of simple illustrations of Kit and Marley! They are non-threatening white foxes demonstrating 30-Second Exercises in 4 easy steps.

Now we know the stakes, how can you get started?

Actionable Tips For Musicians with Pain:

Here's how I would get started:

  • Step 1: Check with your healthcare professional 1st if you have any pain and before starting these or any new exercise program.

  • Step 2: Check out my Blog with past 30-Second Exercise Essays and Kit & Marley Illustrations.

  • Step 3: Link 30-Seconds of Exercise to another action or time. For example, a specific time of day (for me after I give my dog breakfast), or at a coffee break using the Microwave.

That's it!

Ignore the rest of the noise around Exercise. This is all you need to know to take the first step to Being Well! Comments and questions encouraged below!
