There are a lot of books about Filmmaking and Cinematography
And I've read many of them
The best book I have read on the psychology of filmmaking and how to evoke emotion in an audience is The Power of Film by Howard Suber.
For a few reasons:
Suber taught Film Studies at UCLA for decades and is a master educator
Suber references what he calls "memorable popular films", so it's very likely you would have seen many of them and will get the context.
The book shares key insights that blend film theory with practical examples in a way that is easy to grasp
The book is organised alphabetically with succinct one to two-page essays on topics such as "antiheroes", "betrayal", "corruption", "suspense" and "unmasking."
Unlike so many books on filmmaking which focus on technique, this one unapologetically focuses on the human psychology that makes that technique work
If you want to learn more about cinematography, you HAVE to develop a keen understanding of the psychology behind visual storytelling. This is the book to get you on your way.
