A young entrepreneur who had a terrible pitch once wondered
Ronald Hadrian

"How did I get funding for my startup idea despite botching the presentation?"

"Your past is more important than your ability to pitch or interview."

(This is a quote from Jensen Huang, co-founder of Nvidia)

The Story:

Back in 1993, Jensen Huang pitched his startup idea to his former boss Wilf Corrigan.

→ It was one of the worst pitches Wilf had ever heard.

→ He had no idea what Jensen was proposing.

But Wilf did something bold - he vouched for Jensen's capabilities to legendary VC Don Valentine.

"Give this kid money. He's one of my best employees."

Walking into Valentine's office, Jensen was nervous.

→ The pitch was horrible again

→ Yet, Valentine decided to fund him

"Against my best judgment, but Wilf insisted. Lose my money and I'll kill you."

With that funding, Jensen co-founded Nvidia with a focus on computer graphics.

→ It pioneered advancements in AI, data centers, autonomous vehicles

→ Today, Nvidia is the 3rd most valuable company at $2.2 trillion

The Lesson?

Most think a great pitch gets you funded.

But Jensen learned something profound:

→ Your past track record matters more

→ Build skills, credibility over time

→ Have a "good past" people can vouch for

So to all aspiring entrepreneurs:

↳ Build expertise in your domain

↳ Cultivate mentors who believe in you

↳ The pitch is secondary to who you are

↳ Focus on having an impressive past

That's how you raise funds, despite a bad pitch.
