You cannot fill from an empty cup.
It’s better for everyone when you fill from your overflow.
(A quick note from a lesson I taught my kids today.)

We had an opportunity to help someone in our community today.
The text came through yesterday… A “hey, I know the answer is probably no, but I had to ask anyway…” kind of ask.
And our answer wasn’t no - it was a yes!

Our decision to say yes to this opportunity was a family decision, where I got to explain to my kids what it meant to “fill your cup.”

The idea of “filling a cup” is a vague one… but we put it in simple terms:
🍺 You have an emotional cup.
🍺 You fill your cup with things that help you feel like yourself.
🍺 You can’t help others if you’ve been ignoring your own cup.

(I’m gonna be honest… Explaining it to my kids felt like it was SO obvious…)
We talked about how lots of times organizations / people demand our attention, efforts, and time without giving any regard to whether or not our own cup is full.
So it’s up to us to fill our own cup.

We talked about what we’d done that day
➡️ Walked for several miles at the beach
➡️ Spent time together adventuring and playing games
➡️ Relaxed and eaten good food
We all felt like we had full cups, so we could collectively say “yes” to the opportunity to help.

And even though it wasn’t how we’d planned to spend our day, it was the right thing to do.
Our cups were full, so we could help fill others’.
It was a good lesson, too, in helping my kids recognize what fills their cups.

So, just like I asked them, I’ll ask you too…
❓What fills your cup?
❓What does it feel like to fill your own cup?
❓How do you know you’re feeling full and ready to help others with your overflow?
The sooner you recognize this, the better.
