I ask my podcast guests the same questions every episode.
We talk about living life as a mom and entrepreneur. We talk about mom guilt. And we talk about advice to our younger selves.
But then I ask them to define success.
It's my favorite question to ask.
I've done dozens of interviews and not a single answer has been the same. Definitions of success range from money to time, from freedom to a feeling.
But there is one clear theme in all of it.
The entrepreneur space is full of hustle culture and capitalistic dreams. And understandably so. We're living in a capitalistic society where hustle is king.
Success often gets defined for us.
It's 5 figures a month or year 6 figures a year. Always defined by the dollars you're bringing in. Success seems equivalent to being a $$$-aire.
There's no consideration for our own values.
But when we slow down enough to consider what success could be, it's usually more than the money. It's the things the money would allow us to do. To be.
But we never realize that until we slow down.
Here's a quick experiment you can do RIGHT NOW while reading this.
• Take a slow breath - inhale slowly through your nose, hold it at the top for 4 seconds, then exhale slowly.
• Now think about what you would do if time, money, physical health, mental health, etc, were no object.
• What would you do? Who would you be? What would you work towards?
Your answer gives you insight into the values at your inner core.
If you'd travel, perhaps you value new experiences and cultures. If you'd read, perhaps you value learning and expanding your knowledge. If you'd volunteer, perhaps you value service to others.
Sit with your answer for a minute and determine what your answers tell you.
Amplifying those values is your measure of success.
You don't need to get to the point that you're consumed by travel or reading or volunteering to be successful. Success can come in small packages. Maybe you take a small trip, or read one more book this month, or volunteer with a local organization to bring you closer to your own definition of success.
But success is YOURS to define.
You've just gotta slow down enough to figure it out.
