Don't fix what's not broken. —Robert Atkins

Yesterday I succinctly outlined the benefits of adopting Frank Degenaar's WorkFlowy timeline method. As simple and intuitive as it may seem at first glance, after reading his book I can attest there's much more than meets the eye. I'm convinced I would have jumped into the pool and tried it if I were starting out in the world of productivity.

Yet despite its benefits, I haven't taken the leap.

2 reasons I'm not adopting the WorkFlowy timeline

1️⃣ My solid GTD background, which strongly advocates a threefold use of your calendar, strictly for:

  • Time-specific actions

  • Day-specific actions

  • Day-specific information, be it commitments from those around you —family or staff— or as the digital version of a tickler file.

In line with the quote above, why try to fix something that is working for you? I tend to be reluctant to such temptations.

2️⃣ Constant rescheduling has a deleterous effect on trusting your calendar

By scheduling everything ahead of time you turn your calendar into a blend.

A blend of commitments with different meaning. Commitments of one of the above 3 types and others that, deep down, you know are not strictly tied to the day or time they're on. Life's hectic path will derail many of the plans made beforehand, forcing you to constantly reschedule. For me, it means somehow disengaging from today's tasks and accumulating more than I'll be able to swallow at some point in the future.

And, above all, both of them make it a sure recipe for your mind not to trust what appears there.

Birds are not late. A dog does not check its watch. Deer do not fret over passing birthdays. Man alone measures time. Man alone chimes the hour. And, because of this, man alone suffers a paralyzing fear that no other creature endures. A fear of time running out. —Mitch Albom
