Over the past 5 years I've tried over 10 different film labs.
It's important to find a good lab that you can communicate with to work together and refine your scans over time. In the beginning I was shooting everything from weddings to landscapes so I tried a lot!
Here are the best labs and what they do well.
The FINDLab
The FINDLab, based in Utah is one of the best labs for wedding photographers.
This lab uses both a Noritsu and Frontier scanner and is highly trusted in the wedding industry. When I've worked with them in the past they were super professional and the turn around time was less than a week.
State Film Lab
State has sent me some of my favorite landscape scans I've ever seen.
State develops and scans any variety of photos but I have found personally they really shine when it comes to landscapes and city scapes. Super professional with about a two week turn around.
Indie Film Lab
One of the first labs I ever used and I was highly impressed with their portrait scans.
Based in Alabama, Indie seems to shine when it comes to portraits, couples and anything with a more moody vibe. Indie has been in the game for a minute and has a turnaround time of about 5-7 days.
Negative Lab
Negative Lab produces the best interior shots I've ever seen.
I originally found this lab after falling in love with the work of Justin Chung. They produce a very specific look you can find by looking at their instagram that makes interiors look very natural and warm. Based in LA their turn around time is 3-5 days.
Digital Printing and Studio or "That One Photo Lab"
Based in Glendale, CA all the great editorial and fashion photographers use this lab.
You won't be able to find much about them online and you need to email or call to get a quote but their work speaks for itself. The scans are beautiful and the lab comes recommended by photographers with high reputation.
In the end It's important to find a lab that caters to your style.
It may take a while to find the one, but it's worth it to find the perfect lab.
