I've tested over 100+ AI applications.
The most common issue?
Fake AI claims.
Use these 10 insights to identify authentic AI apps in less than 5 minutes:
AI vs Non AI primer: Let's first do a primer on what is and what's not considered AI solution so we can level set.
In a simple term, any system that can perform tasks that requires human intelligence is considered AI.
These solutions typically understand
Natural language
Data patterns
Decision making and let's not forget
Continuous learning.
Now, remember I said in simple terms. There are some nuances around it but we will keep it simple.
Any system that is operating on predefined set of rules or instructions is no an AI solution.
What do I mean by that?
Your light switch turns on when you turn it on and turns off.
Maybe that's too simple so let me give another example: an ecommerce app that reads your website content to provide SEO recommendations based on best practices it was programmed for is not an AI app.
Make sense?
Now, let's talk about how to spot a fake AI solution so you can invest in AI wisely.
AI vs Scripted Responses: As I mentioned above, there is a difference in understanding user inputs vs catching keywords.
Genuine AI apps can understand language structured or unstructured and make sense out of it.
Unfortunately, apps that do not understand language models rely on keywords.
Example: If you see a chat bot responding only to keyword and not big sentences then you guessed it... it's not powered by AI.
Data Processing Capability: AI app can process and analyze large datasets.
In healthcare, AI can analyze medical records to predict health risks.
Non-AI app will not be able to handle large amounts of data and throw an error.
Even if it reads the data, it will not provide an accurate prediction.
Learning and Adaptation: AI applications can learn over time and continue to improve response.
Example: Large organizations use AI solutions for salary that takes input from macro factors like economy, peer benchmark, role/title, performance and provides a salary recommendation.
Non-AI app cannot adapt to new information unless it is reprogrammed to do so.
User Interaction: AI solutions will personalized the user experience based on:
Browsing history
Profile changes
Social interaction
Non-AI app cannot do that.
Transparency of Function: This might be the litmus test to identify the fake AI apps.
Authentic AI app will disclose the AI technology they use.
Example: Go to your favorite app store and check if the photo editing app you downloaded to see if it says neural networks for image processing or similar?
If it does not tells you then there is a good chance it is a fake AI app.
Independence in Functioning: AI solutions can operate on it's own without depending on human intervention.
Tesla uses AI based autonomous driving capability to navigate.
On the other hand, I have an older version of Lexus that requires me to update the map app using an SD card.
That's not AI.
I like my car though :)
Problem-Solving Skills: If a solution can solve complex problems i.e. predicting weather of financial pattern then it's AI.
A calculator is not an AI solution although it can solve problems.
Natural Language Understanding: Understanding human language and it's subtle nuances like sarcasm or jokes is an AI capability.
ChatGTP 4 can write poems, jokes and stories while your word document cannot (at least of this writing)
Emotional Intelligence: Some AI solutions have emotional intelligence and can recognize emotional patterns to adapt.
A chatbot powered by AI can detect customer frustration from voice or text and provide calming response.
Ethical and Privacy Considerations: AI app can be programmed to consider privacy issues.
A facial recognition AI can keep the user privacy intact while still unlocking your iPhone.
Fake AI solution cannot do that.
So there you have it.
