In November of 2020, I woke up in a panic.
My heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest.
I thought I was having a heart attack.
Turns out it was something else.
Something I slowly discovered is the #1 sneakiest reason many people fail in business.
👇
I've been running a company for 10 years.
Over those years, I've learned that people who want to achieve success over a long period of time often end up failing because of one non-obvious reason:
Lack of REST.
Let me explain:
Most entrepreneur types feel, at some level, that to get to the 'top' you need to push hard.
That's partially true.
What they don't realize is that left unchecked, constant effort will eventually hold them back.
To be honest, it took me quite a while to learn that lesson...
I went through major burnout in 2021, developed temporary health complications, and had to take 6 weeks off work.
Why?
Lack of rest...and it's not simply that I needed more sleep.
In 2017, @DrDaltonSmith wrote a book outlining 7 different types of rest we all need:
physical
mental
emotional
sensory
social
creative
spiritual
It turns out the hurried, high-pressure life many of us live often results in:
exhaustion
decreasing happiness
loneliness
lack of creativity
as we ignore the deep rest, on many levels, that we desperately need.
So it's not just sleep that you need.
And it's not just time away from email.
Or a quick vacation to the beach (though that helps).
You need soul-deep rest at every level.
For me, after multiple doctor visits, it became clear what I'd experienced that night in November
My 'heart attack' was actually a panic attack of some sort.
I was deeply, completely, physiologically burned out.
Had something bad or stressful happened that set me over the edge?
No.
In fact things had been going kind of well.
Lack of rest, for me, resulted in total burnout.
For others it can result in:
dependency on alcohol or drugs
loss of passion for their work
relational trouble
poor performance
and much more
It results in behavior that increases the chance of 'failure' in their business.
Lack of rest is a sneaky, subtle business killer...
But people ignore it because it creeps in slowly, over time.
@simonsinek calls business an infinite game.
To 'win' in the infinite game, you can't score points or track metrics...you just need to stay IN it.
And to stay in the game and avoid failure, you need rest.
