5 ways to write a strong beginning
Samrat Ghosh

This atomic essay is a series of actionable advice from the book '100 ways to improve your writing' by late author and legendary writer instructor Gary Provost.

This timeless advice is from chapter three of the mentioned book.

Here are the 5 ways -

1. Find a slant

Fix yourself to a specific idea about a broader idea, that specific idea is manageable and writable. This aspect is called slant.

  • unslanted idea - The Vietnam War.

  • slanted idea - 1. how much did Vietnam cost us?

    2. What did we learn from Vietnam?

    3. The Vietnam war: Is it really over?

2. Write a strong lead

The lead is whatever it takes to lead your readers so deeply into your story or article that they will not turn back unless you stray from the path you have put them on. It should have energy, excitement, and a promise that something is going to happen or some interesting information will be revealed.

3. Don't make promises you can't keep

A lead is not strong if it doesn't deliver on the promise it makes. If the lead is not supported by what follows, it will do more harm than good.

4. Set a tone and maintain it

Your choice of words, arrangement of those words, and your choice of information convey to the reader some message about the tone of the story.

5. Begin at the Beginning

Bad beginning - I'm writing this memo because sam Morini has fled the country and I need to replace him quickly.

Better beginning - Sam Morini has fled the country, and I need to replace him quickly.

End of this piece. Those were the 5 ways he mentioned 'to write with a strong beginning'. I will share another actionable chapter on my next atomic essay.
