Change is not one-size-fits-all.

Japan’s three “K’s” help us choose:
Kaizen, Kaikaku, and Kakushin.
Three paths, speeds, and risk levels.

The key is knowing when each one fits.

1. Kaizen → Small Steps

Kaizen is daily improvement through small changes.
Everyone can help improve the work, every day.
It is low risk, easy to test, and adjust.

Example: Improving a production line, one step at a time.

2. Kaikaku → Big Leaps

Kaikaku is major change when small fixes fall short.
It needs strong leadership, clear direction, and focused action.
The risk is higher, but the impact is bigger.

Example: Rolling out a new ERP system across the business.

3. Kakushin → Breakthroughs

Kakushin is breakthrough innovation that creates a new path.
It is rare, bold, and high risk.
But it can redefine work, products, or markets.

Example: Creating a product that changes the market.

Think of it like this:

Kaizen is climbing a ladder: steady, step by step.
Kaikaku is taking an elevator: faster and more direct.
Kakushin is launching a rocket: beyond old limits.

Operations leaders and Lean practitioners need all three.

Use Kaizen to build daily habits.
Use Kaikaku when the system needs a reset.
Use Kakushin when the future needs a new answer.

Growth comes from choosing the right change at the right time.
