What fears are holding you back? This question surfaces at critical junctures in life; for me, it arose as I prepared to move to a new challenge in life - a decision both liberating and daunting. Coincidentally—or perhaps not—I stumbled upon old notes from The Savvy Intern blog (2012), a timely message reminding me not to let fear dictate my life or career. (Aside: in a search this morning resulted in me not been able to find the original website.)
But was it truly a coincidence? I doubt it. Opportunities, ideas, and inspiration often appear when we are ready to notice them, aligning preparation and opportunity into what many call “luck.”
We often admire “lucky” individuals who seem always to be in the right place at the right time, yet their success is rarely accidental. These people reflect on their goals, stay attuned to their surroundings, and actively pursue opportunities, with preparedness sharpening their vision to spot chances others miss.
So, are you ready? Have you taken the time to clarify your desires and prepare for the opportunities that will undoubtedly arise?
As Melissa Anzman, author of the Loosen Your White Collar blog, once challenged: “What fears are holding you back from pursuing the life you truly want?” Are you prioritizing others’ opinions over your own desires, a fear that, upon reflection, seems absurd? (Again, I found this in my old notebooks, but cannot find the website, so assume it has been taken down.)
This morning’s rediscovery reminds me that seizing opportunity isn’t about waiting for luck—it’s about staying prepared and overcoming fear. As I step into my next chapter, I ask: What would I do if I weren’t afraid? What about you?
