3 Mistakes I Made Early In My Career As An Interior Designer — And What I Would Have Done Differently

I have been working as an interior designer for 16 years.

And in that time, I have done a lot of cool stuff:

  • I have met people who run unusual businesses, like zoo owners

  • I designed a museum and a popular music club in my hometown.

  • I have helped many people to improve their living space.

There's not much I would change about my path.

But if I could go back, here are some of the mistakes I made in the beginning - and what I would have done differently:

1. taking on too many jobs at once

In the beginning, I was excited and anxious about the future. That is why I was taking on practically every job that came my way. It was exhausting and led to chaos.

In the long run, it slowed me down.

If I were to start all over again, I would not take more than one job at a time, at least the first year.

2. acting without a plan

I didn't think about what I was doing. This also contributed to slow growth. I worked in a state of constant lagging behind.

I was wasting my own time.

If I were starting over, I would write down the tasks I performed on the first project, note the completion time, and create a project work plan. I would have an invaluable information base for developing my own business in no time.

3. lack of time for development

I was unaware of the costs of working without a plan and with overlapping deadlines. Time. The constant rush robbed me of my personal time.

Planning work should start with planning a break.

By, taking one job at a time and building my work system immediately, I would use the time saved to develop my skills and live a more conscious life.
