As mentioned in my earlier essay: after suffering major internet outage where I live, it's made me realise just how dependent I am and I assume many people are on being online.

The best thing to do is be prepared to know what flaws there are in your systems and also to test whatever solutions you come up with.

So firstly the most important thing is you can have offline drills. Testing is no more complex than simply disconnecting the cable to your router. You could switch off the router but that wouldn't quite be a true test and there are things you may want to do that would require your router.

Let's go old school first.

Single device, presumably some computer, for this you could test just by disconnecting your computer or switching off its wifi. This is true offline work where you want to see which applications and tools you use require constant connection.

There will be some applications you use that have some kind of call home built in, usually this is to confirm that you are licensed for the software. Otherwise they usually work fine without internet connection or at least for the most part.

There may be online features but not core to the application.

This is where the old guard software giants actually work better, so think of your Microsoft Office and Mac equivalents rather than Google Worksuite. Google has pushed for offline working but it's not going to be anywhere near as robust.

Offline, locally installed applications rather than web based services.
