I love diesel trucks. My first truck was a 1988 Ford F-250 4x4 with the 7.3 diesel. I love the sound, I love the smell, all of it. Typically diesel engines are associated with power, durability and better fuel mileage. Hauling loads. Doing hard work on a bunch of construction sites throughout America. Hauling food and goods all around our country.

Recently though, I have read a number of articles concerning a trend called "Coal Rolling". I asked ChatGPT what the definition of coal rolling is just to be clear I knew what I was thinking. Here is what ChatGPT said;

"Coal rolling" is the practice of modifying a diesel engine, typically in trucks, to emit large amounts of black or gray exhaust smoke. This is done by increasing the amount of fuel injected into the engine, often in combination with removing or tampering with emissions control devices like particulate filters. The term "coal rolling" comes from the thick, dark smoke that resembles the smoke from burning coal.

The practice is often done as a form of protest against environmental regulations or to irritate other drivers, especially those in smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles or cyclists. Can I ask a serious question? Why? What has an EV ever done to you. Are diesel drivers afraid that the Government is going to take away your access to diesel? Outlaw diesel vehicles? What is it?

I want to switch gears here and give my pitch for EV's. Now, don't stop reading just yet, I might actually change your mind on EV's.

First though, I want to attempt to dispel your fears about losing diesel trucks. First, it is going to take a long, long time to take them out of circulation. I'm going to guess, not in our lifetime. There are too many jobs that these vehicles are needed for. Second, battery technology still needs to be better perfected. And third, the charging infrastructure is not there yet. Someday these things may get better but for now, we are not even close.

Think about this, if half of all cars on the road were switched to battery power, how much would the demand for gasoline drop? I would guess that it would drop significantly, OK, by half..... What would that do to diesel fuel prices? Because supply and demand factors are now involved, my guess would be that the price of diesel would drop. I mean, that would be good for diesel owners, right?

I predict, EV's are never going to completely replace ICE or diesel vehicles. But I do think the adoption of EV's would be benificial for everyone. Diesel folks too. So give the "Coal Rolling" a break, it may just help bring down fuel prices.
