The Roots of Hospice: Caring for the Dying Throughout History
Steve Pare RN BS MBA

Throughout history, humanity has grappled with mortality. From the ancient Egyptians' elaborate preparations for the afterlife to the Greeks' philosophical ponderings, care for the dying has been a constant theme.

Imagine yourself in ancient Egypt, where death was seen as a transition to another realm. The Egyptians spared no effort in preparing bodies for their journey beyond, with embalming techniques that could rival modern preservation methods. Elaborate tombs stood as monuments to their commitment to a peaceful transition.

Fast forward to ancient Greece, where temples dedicated to Asclepius offered solace to the sick and dying. Philosophers like Socrates pondered the meaning of suffering, laying the groundwork for discussions on palliative care.

In the Roman Empire, hospitia provided refuge for travelers and the sick alike. These havens, along with the charitable efforts of figures like Fabiola, for whom care for the dying was not just a practical necessity but a moral imperative.

During the Middle Ages, monasteries and hospices became sanctuaries for the the terminally ill, offering physical comfort and spiritual solace. Along pilgrimage routes, travelers found solace in these havens of hospitality. Monastic communities embodied the values of respect, dignity, and compassion that would become the foundation of modern hospice care.

The modern hospice movement, founded by Dame Cicely Saunders in the 20th century, drew inspiration from these historical precedents. While medical advancements have transformed the way we care for the dying, the core values of hospice endure. Respect, dignity, and compassion continue to guide us as we accompany individuals on their journey towards the end of life.
