The Ultimate Guide To Monthly Herb Study for a Healthier, More Informed You
Emily Davis

My main New Year's Resolution this year was to complete an herb of the month study.

As part of a philosophy, I hold that a life well lived is one spent following your curiosity. I enrolled in herbalism school in 2020.  What I didn’t realize then was that I was really scratching the surface of a rabbit hole that I will probably spend the rest of my life falling down.

Herbalism is an art and science that you could spend a lifetime studying and still have so much to learn.

I love the idea of taking one herb a month to focus learning everything you can about it. Here is how I plan to do this.

  • 1. Choose the Herb:

    • Start by selecting the herb you want to study for the month. Consider herbs that are easily accessible, that pique your interest, and are safe enough to work with every day for 30 days.

  • Research:

    • Gather information about the selected herb. Look into its botanical classification, history, cultural significance, traditional uses, medicinal properties, and relevant folklore.

  • Grow:

    • Explore the optimal growing conditions for the herb. If feasible, consider growing the herb yourself in a garden or pot.

  • Experiment:

    • Every day, find a new way to interact with the plant. This could include cooking with it, making herbal teas, creating herbal remedies, or crafting with the plant.

  • Document:

    • Keep a journal or document your findings. The main point here is to note how the plant feels in your body.
