Rory Sutherland, legendary British advertising executive, coined the Doorman Fallacy.

When you arrive at a grand hotel, you notice the doorman - sharply dressed, front and center, easy to label.

He opens doors. That's what you remember.

But watch him for a full shift, and you get a different picture. He/She:

👉🏽 reads body language for things most people never notice.

👉🏽 recognizes the returning guest by name and making them feel the hotel has been waiting for them.

👉🏽 serves as first line security, hailing cabs, managing luggage, navigating peak-hour chaos with practiced, effortless calm.

The doorman holds tacit knowledge that can't be written in a training manual. The doorman isn't just opening the door. Yet we named him for the door.

The Doorman Fallacy happens when we confuse the thing we easily name with the thing that creates the value.

Dance teachers are one of the most mis-labeled professionals.
