3 Books That Transformed My Perspective on Trauma-Informed Best Practices Inside and Outside of the Workplace
Tania De Ridder (she/her)

I have been interested in how trauma affects people at work, and how it can affect our working relationships, for a while now.

I credit my personal growth on this topic to the following three books widely respected within the field of trauma-informed practices:

The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma" by Bessel van der Kolk, M.D.

This book explores the impact of trauma on individuals and emphasizes the understanding that trauma affects not only the mind but also the body. It delves into the neurobiology of trauma, explaining how traumatic experiences can shape the brain and impact various aspects of an individual's life, including their emotions, thoughts, and physical well-being.

Widen the Window: Training Your Brain and Body to Thrive During Stress and Recover from Trauma" by Elizabeth A. Stanley, PhD, and Bessel van der Kolk, M.D.

This book explores the impact of stress and trauma on individuals and delves into the concept of widening the window of tolerance for stress, which refers to expanding an individual's ability to handle stressors without becoming overwhelmed. It discusses different techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and body-centered practices that can be utilized to regulate the nervous system.

The Heart of Trauma: Healing the Embodied Brain in the Context of Relationships" by Bonnie Badenoch

This book highlights the essential role of relationships in healing from trauma. It explores how attuned and supportive connections can help individuals regulate their emotions, restore a sense of safety, and foster resilience, and emphasizes the importance of creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

These books have taught me so much—and, just like they did with me, I hope to pass along my own learnings of these invaluable insights to the next person, including you, if you’re curious about how understanding trauma can enhance our relationships within the workplace.

Have you had the opportunity to explore any of these books? If so, I would love to hear if any particular insight or lesson stood out as your personal favourite.
