Let me tell you about my experience with trying to excel in all avenues of my craft life: I didn’t succeed at all.
Recently, I noticed that I was committing too much time on projects that were spreading me too thin and I was rushing to complete them.
I wanted to be a podcast authority. I wanted to write an amazing newsletter/blog. I wanted to write high quality music. I wanted to be epic in everything I did. All I ended up doing was making epically bad podcasts, long winded articles, and repetitive melodies with no soul.
I must choose to excel at one or two of those things. I can’t do all three, otherwise I’ll burn up precious time and I know I’ll throw in the towel. Maybe the podcasting or the music idea can take a little break.
What about you? What’s something you can let go off that takes up too much time, so you can smash that worthwhile project? Can you set aside that half decent sketch art project to make even better beats? Maybe you can stop chasing money so that you can get into shape? Can you write some good poems all day instead of trying to make some bad T-shirts?
Think of the amount of time and focus you’ll gain from letting go of that project or idea that wasn’t going anywhere or wasn’t all that exciting! You can always go back to it later.
Confucius reminds us that chasing two rabbits means we’ll always come up empty handed. Choose your target and focus on it with intent. You don’t have to be a Jack of all trades right this second.
Focus is the key to kicking ass.
