Writing online is simple.

But most make rocket science out of it. They try to sound more creative than J.K. Rowling and write better than Stephen King.

All they do is scare people away.

Here's how you don't.

#1 Write like you'd speak after downing a G&T

Lately, my friend and I went to a gin-tasting.

And boy, we had a great time.

145m high above Stuttgart, we enjoyed local gins, had funny talks, and were even invited to see parts that weren't accessible to the public.

How?

By having a good time and radiating it like Tchernobyl, we befriended the wife of the distiller, Katharina, who told us everything about the burned-down distillery, her South African origin, and their holiday home down there.

In the end, they even used their Porsche to chauffeur us to the closest train station.

And it was all only because we had a good time.

People can tell if you:

a) have a good time and

b) be as you are

That's what your writing needs more of, too.

Make your quirky jokes, show what you like, have fun, and enjoy the process of writing instead of trying too hard to find the latest trend.

Then, do this.

#2 Show, don't tell

At some point, Katharina almost stopped speaking.

Instead, she showed us pictures of her holiday home, the distillery, what they've been up to when delivering Gins to Dubai, and much more.

We loved it because it helped us resonate with them and their brand.

In writing, it's the same.

You can describe how you've been frustrated because you left your job.

But you can also write how you sat desperate and sobbing between your two still-packed suitcases after failing another career and moving back in with your parents.

Make your writing visual to make it resonate.

Readers click a headline.

But they want the pictures you paint in their heads.

The same happened when we came for the gin but stayed for the vivid pictures and stories of what both have been through to sell their small batches worldwide.

As a writer, you paint with words.

#3 Make it a story

Let's be honest: if you want to write better, you could ask ChatGPT.

Instead, you're reading this post. Why?

Because it's a story.

You came for the information, but you stayed for the story about the gin-tasting and what we've been up to in the first TV tower worldwide.

I took you on a journey instead of only trying to educate you.

Do the same in your writing.

There's a reason why stories survive thousands of years while instructions never get read (and people start assembling furniture independently).

Leverage that.

Make your readers part of your life.

Although you haven't been there, you've felt what it's like to sip G&Ts at 145m height.

Take your readers on an adventure.
