I couldn't believe it myself.

But there I was. Sitting at my parents' dinner table, earning money writing online.

If I had told this to my past self only 9 months prior, he would have laughed at me for being so naive.

Now, it was the other way around.

Naiveity won't save you

2019, I earned my first $350 writing.

It was for an ebook about meditation for a client from Austria.

It felt incredible, but also like the biggest I could do when it came to earning money writing. The ones "making it"? Scammers.

Only a month later, I found myself interviewing for a recruitment position in London and was asked:

"Tim, I've seen you've written a book about meditation. That's awesome. But how comes you don't pursue writing then?"

I naively replied:

"Yes, thanks. I loved it but honestly, I don't think there's much money in writing." and started working there three weeks later.

It turned out to be a big misunderstanding. Covid broke out, I returned to Germany, felt like a complete idiot, and had this itchy patch in my brain saying:

"Mate, what if?".

Turned out I've been the one scamming myself.

The painful truth is this

As a writer, you are your biggest asset.

That's both awesome and a hurdle.

If you get your head straight, you produce content people love.

If you don't, you're standing in your own way.

This boils down to one thing: if you tell yourself there's no money in writing, there will never be money in writing because you'll subconsciously sabotage yourself.

Sounds like spirit/universe rah rah, but it is basic psychology.

But even if you only open the door slightly enough to let a "What if?" slip in, you have the potential to start earning money by writing.

That's all you need to start.

The openness to mistrust is the lie you've been telling yourself the entire time. Then, nothing can stop you.

And you end up as the one smiling.
