What are you afraid of?
I remember reading Tim Ferriss' book, The Four Hour Work Week a number of years ago, and being struck by his section on fear. Rightly so, he pointed out that fear is incredibly paralyzing. Fear stops many from taking a risk, keeping them from trying something new, or even being who they really are. Fear keeps them stuck.
And I realized, I was afraid.
Here were 3 fears that were keeping me stuck.
Looking Like A Fool
I won't raise my hand. I might not know the right answer.
I won't try that. What if I don't do it right...or as good as everyone else?
I won't make that suggestion. It might sound stupid.
What if people laugh?
Having Uncomfortable Conversations
I don't want to make that call or make that ask? They might reject me.
It's okay that they didn't get the order right. I can work it out.
I know they could do better but I don't want them to feel bad.
What if they misunderstand what I am trying to say?
Taking Action Without Knowing the Outcome
That seems too risky.
What happens if it doesn't work out?
What will people think if I fail?
How can I be sure?
The Response
Ferriss' insightful and challenging response to fear is found in these quotes:
"What we fear doing most, is usually what we most need to do."
"Resolve to do one thing every day that you fear."
My response...striving to raise my hand, having the talk, taking the shot.
And sometimes...still being afraid.
