Tweeting From Outer Space: Here's The Story Of The First Tweets From Low Earth Orbit

It's not only "down-to-earth" people who tweet regularly. For over a decade, astronauts have also sent tweets from low Earth orbit.

But the first tweet wasn't as easy as in the present day.

The First Tweet Written In Space

In 2009, Mike Massimino was the crew member of STS-125, the last Space Shuttle mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.

NASA asked him to draft the first tweet from space. So Massimino drafted a tweet on Day 2 of the mission. But he couldn't just post it from the Space Shuttle.

He emailed his draft back to Earth, and a NASA staffer posted it on his Twitter account.

The tweet said:

"From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!"

The First Live Tweet From Space

In 2010, the International Space Station (ISS) got a software update to have direct internet access.

At that time, T.J. Creamer served as a Flight Engineer on the ISS during Expedition 22.

Thanks to the fresh direct internet connection, he wrote & published the very first tweet live directly from the ISS.

His tweet was this:

"Hello Twitterverse! We r now LIVE tweeting from the International Space Station -- the 1st live tweet from Space! :) More soon, send your ?s"

Since then, tweeting from space is not a novelty anymore.

Almost all astronauts do it regularly, and they keep us spaceflight geeks updated live on what's happening 408 km (253 mi) above us at the space station.
