"We may not have it all together, but together we have it all."
A few years ago, my wife and I sold our house in the suburb and bought a few acres in a semi-rural area not far away. There we have three separate homes: one for us and one for each of our adult sons and their families. Our friends jokingly call it our "family compound."
We just call it the best home ever.
Abundant Family Time
While everyone has their own space and privacy, we get together often. We're not limited to weekends and holidays. The grandkids love to drop in just to hang out, and there's plenty of space for them to ride bikes, climb trees, and do other outdoor kid stuff.
More Bang for the Buck
By splitting expenses, each family's cost of living is significantly less. With price inflation since the pandemic, what a difference that has made! It's also allowing our kids to save and invest more for the future than they could otherwise.
Many Hands Make Light Work
When there's work to do, help is not far away.
Expanded Social Circle
With the extra space, we're able to host large parties, family reunions, and more. At times, one family or another may throw a private party, but other times we all get together and meet new friends and friends of friends.
Several years into this experiment, it's working quite well. I know it won't last forever, but we're sure enjoying it while we can. It's a choice I highly recommend.
